When Aer updates one of its most popular silhouettes, we pay attention—especially when it’s a bag we already like. The Aer City Pack Pro 2 20L takes what worked in the 24L version and scales it down into a more compact, everyday-friendly package. At first glance, it looks like a simple size reduction, but after testing, we’ve found that the differences go deeper than capacity alone.

This 20L version leans hard into daypack territory. While the 24L version blurs the line between travel backpack and everyday carry, this smaller iteration feels more intentional—more focused. The organization hits differently, the pocket layout shifts, and the way you pack it changes your entire experience. So, is smaller actually better here? Let’s get into it.

External Components

Aer sticks to what it does best with materials, and that’s immediately apparent here. Like its larger sibling, the 20L version uses durable, premium fabrics: 1680D CORDURA® ballistic nylon or alternative fabrics like X-Pac or Ultra, depending on the variant. These materials are rugged, structured, and weather-resistant, maintaining the brand’s reputation for long-term durability. They also hold their shape exceptionally well, which gives the bag that signature boxy, architectural look Aer is known for. Over time, this structure helps prevent sagging, even when the bag isn’t fully packed out, which is something we’ve come to appreciate with daily use.

The aesthetic remains clean and minimal. Branding is subtle, with understated logos and restrained accents. It’s the kind of bag that works just as well in an office setting as it does on a weekend outing or short trip. There’s a certain intentionality to the design—it doesn’t try to stand out, but it still looks premium if you pay attention to the details.

One of the first differences we notice when we compare it to the 24L version is the side layout. Instead of dual water bottle pockets, the 20L swaps one out for a vertical zippered or slip-style pocket, which is a nod to the original City Pack Pro design. At first, this feels like a compromise, especially if you’re used to symmetrical bottle storage. However, in practice, this additional pocket adds surprising versatility. It becomes a quick-access dump zone for smaller items—battery banks, charging cables, lip balm, hand sanitizer, or keys, as there is a key leash inside. We’ve also found that it works well for items you want semi-secured but still easy to grab without opening the main compartment.

That said, the remaining water bottle pocket is tight. It can technically fit larger bottles like a Nalgene, but doing so significantly eats into the internal volume of the bag. Because the pocket is not fully independent, anything bulky placed inside pushes inward, reducing usable space in the main compartment. In real-world use, slimmer bottles in the 18–24 oz range feel much more appropriate. This design reinforces the idea that the 20L version prioritizes compactness over maximum versatility.

Handles are well-executed across the board. You get padded grab handles on the top and both sides, making it easy to carry the bag from multiple orientations. The padding is soft and compressible, offering a comfortable grip without feeling overly bulky. Interestingly, the side handles have slightly less padding along the edges, which actually improves grip by allowing your hand to wrap around them more naturally. It’s a subtle ergonomic decision that makes a noticeable difference when quickly grabbing the bag on the go.

Zippers throughout the bag are high-quality and include self-locking mechanisms on key compartments. This is especially useful for the admin and top quick-access pockets, as it prevents accidental openings when the bag is in motion. The zipper pulls are made from Hypalon and feature Aer branding, adding a premium tactile feel without being flashy.

Moving to the harness system, things feel very familiar—in a good way. The shoulder straps are well-padded and ergonomically shaped, distributing weight comfortably across your shoulders. While this isn’t a heavy-load hauler, it performs well within its intended range, handling daily carry setups with ease. The back panel features structured foam with subtle air channels that help with airflow without going overboard. It’s not the most ventilated system we’ve tested, but it strikes a balance between comfort and structure.

The magnetic sternum strap is a standout feature. It’s quick to attach and detach, and it stays securely in place during movement. We’ve found it especially useful when biking or walking longer distances, as it helps stabilize the load without adding complexity.

There’s also a luggage pass-through integrated into the back panel, secured with hook-and-loop fastener so it lies flat when not in use. It’s a small but thoughtful inclusion for those who occasionally pair this bag with rolling luggage.

Overall, the external features and harness system feel refined and intentional. While the 20L version introduces a few trade-offs—particularly with the water bottle pocket—it also adds functionality elsewhere, making it feel like a deliberate evolution rather than just a scaled-down version.

Fit Notes

When you’re wearing it, the difference between the 20L and 24L versions is subtle but meaningful. The 20L sits closer to your back, with a lower profile that makes it feel more agile in tight spaces. Whether you’re navigating crowded public transport or squeezing through narrow aisles, that reduced bulk makes a noticeable difference. For smaller frames, the 20L is likely the better fit. It doesn’t overwhelm your proportions, and it feels more balanced when worn for extended periods. Even for larger users, the compactness can be a benefit—it just depends on how much gear you typically carry.

One thing we’ve noticed is that the structured materials become more apparent when the bag is fully packed. Because the fabric doesn’t collapse, the bag maintains its shape even when it’s stuffed to capacity. This can make it feel a bit rigid, especially compared to softer packs, but it also helps protect your gear and maintain organization. Weight distribution is solid, and the bag remains comfortable even when loaded with tech and daily essentials. The sternum strap helps stabilize heavier loads, and the overall design encourages you to pack within reasonable limits.

Inside The Backpack

The interior is where the 20L version really distinguishes itself—and in many ways, improves upon the experience of the 24L. While both share a similar design philosophy, the smaller capacity forces a more refined, intentional layout.

Starting with the front stash pocket, you’ll find a loop where you can attach the key leash (the one in the side pocket mentioned above). Notably, its placement is more accessible than in the 24L version. Instead of being buried deep within the pocket, it sits slightly higher, making it easier to grab your keys without digging. This small adjustment makes a big difference in daily use, especially when you’re frequently in and out of the bag.

Above this pocket, the admin panel is one of the bag’s highlights. It features a mix of stretchy mesh pockets and sleeves, plus a cleverly integrated pen slot that doesn’t intrude on usable space. The mesh pockets have a bit of give, allowing them to accommodate bulkier items without feeling overly tight. While some may have concerns about long-term stretching, we haven’t found it to be an issue in practice.

What we appreciate most here is the balance. There’s enough organization to keep things tidy, but not so much that it dictates how you pack. This is particularly important in a 20L bag, where every bit of space counts. You’re free to use pouches, tech organizers, or simply toss items in as needed without fighting against rigid compartments.

The top quick-access pocket is lined with a soft, elastic material, making it ideal for items like sunglasses, phones, or wallets. The fabric’s elastic nature allows it to expand slightly, accommodating different shapes without feeling restrictive. Combined with the self-locking zipper, it’s a secure and convenient place to store essentials you need on the fly.

Inside the main compartment, the layout is intentionally minimal. There’s a large open space that can accommodate packing cubes, clothing, or bulkier items. We’ve managed to fit multiple packing cubes—enough for a weekend trip or even longer if you pack efficiently. However, once you fill the main compartment, there’s very little room left for additional items. This reinforces the idea that the 20L is best suited for shorter trips or lighter carry setups.

Against the back panel, there’s a sleeve for flat items. While it’s not heavily padded, it’s useful for documents, a tablet, or slim accessories. Above, a mesh pocket provides a bit of additional organization, while a flatter pocket below is better suited for thinner items.

The laptop compartment is well-executed, fitting up to a 16-inch device. It includes decent padding and some level of drop protection, though it doesn’t extend fully to the bottom of the bag. That said, the structured back panel adds rigidity, which helps protect your device from impacts. There’s also an additional sleeve within the compartment for accessories, though it’s fairly minimal.

One thing to note is how different pockets interact with each other. Because of the compact size, many compartments share space. For example, overloading the front admin panel can reduce capacity in the main compartment, and vice versa. This isn’t necessarily a flaw—it’s just part of working with a smaller bag. It encourages more intentional packing and prevents you from overloading any one area.

The additional side pocket we mentioned earlier also plays a role in the overall interior experience. While technically external, it functions as an extension of your internal organization. It’s particularly useful for items you want quick access to without disrupting the main packing layout.

In use, the interior feels cohesive and well-thought-out. It doesn’t try to do too much, which ultimately works in its favor. Instead, it provides a flexible foundation that adapts to your needs—whether that’s daily carry, light travel, or something in between.
