Full Review

The Cotopaxi Allpa line has become one of the most recognizable travel backpack collections on the market, blending colorful aesthetics with practical travel-focused organization. However, the Cotopaxi Allpa 26L Daypack takes a slightly different approach. While it borrows some DNA from its travel-oriented siblings, it feels more like a dedicated daypack that happens to work well for travel rather than a bulky travel backpack trying to squeeze into your daily life. After testing it for two weeks in a variety of situations, we’ve found it occupies an interesting middle ground between commuter bag, personal item, and lightweight travel companion.

At first glance, the Cotopaxi Allpa 26L Daypack looks familiar enough to fit comfortably within its lineup. It has the bold color blocking, external attachment points, and practical design language we’ve come to expect from Cotopaxi. Yet once we started using it, the differences became much more apparent. Instead of prioritizing maximum travel organization and full clamshell access, this pack focuses on comfort, accessibility, and versatility, making it a compelling option for travelers who want one bag that transitions seamlessly from daily life to weekend adventures.

External Components

The version we’ve been testing is the Del Dia model, which utilizes repurposed deadstock fabrics to create a unique appearance. No two Del Dia bags are exactly alike, and ours features a vibrant combination of colors that immediately stands out. If you prefer a more traditional aesthetic, the standard version of the Cotopaxi Allpa 26L Daypack uses the TPU-coated front panel that has become a hallmark of the larger Allpa travel packs, paired with recycled 840D ripstop fabric throughout the rest of the exterior.

Regardless of which version you choose, the materials strike a nice balance between durability and weight savings. The bag remains comfortably under two pounds, which is impressive considering its capacity and feature set. During testing, the materials felt sturdy enough for daily commuting, travel, and general use without making the bag feel overly rigid or heavy.

The exterior includes several familiar Allpa-inspired design elements. Daisy chains run along the front panel, allowing you to attach additional gear externally when needed. While we don’t always find ourselves clipping equipment to the outside of our bags, it’s a useful feature for travelers who occasionally need extra carrying capacity or want quick access to items like a packable jacket.

YKK zippers are used throughout the pack, and we’ve had no issues with their performance. The zipper pulls feature nylon extensions that make them easy to grab, even while wearing gloves or navigating crowded transit environments. It’s a small detail, but one that contributes positively to the overall user experience.

Cotopaxi Allpa 26L Daypack Top Handle

A top carry handle sits at the upper portion of the pack, making it easy to grab from an overhead compartment, vehicle floor, or office desk. The handle feels secure and comfortable in hand, which is important since we often carry daypacks this way for short distances.

The water bottle pockets deserve special mention; they perform exceptionally well. During testing, we regularly carried a 21-ounce water bottle and never felt like it was at risk of falling out. Cotopaxi claims the pockets can accommodate bottles up to 32 ounces, and based on our experience with their depth and elasticity, that seems entirely believable. The pockets maintain a secure hold without becoming difficult to access, which is exactly what we want in an everyday carry bag.

One feature that immediately increases this pack’s travel versatility is the luggage pass-through on the back panel. This allows the bag to slide over the handle of rolling luggage, making it an excellent companion for airport travel. When you combine that with its relatively compact dimensions, the Cotopaxi Allpa 26L Daypack feels well-positioned to serve as a personal item on many airlines.

Moving to the harness system, comfort is where this bag truly shines. Cotopaxi has consistently produced comfortable carry systems across much of its lineup, and this pack continues that trend. The shoulder straps feature generous padding with a firmer feel than some competitors. Instead of compressing easily when squeezed, the foam maintains its structure, creating a stable platform that distributes weight effectively.

We found this design particularly beneficial when carrying heavier loads. Even when we packed the main compartment with electronics, jackets, and daily essentials, the shoulder straps retained their shape and avoided creating pressure points.

The sternum strap uses a sliding rail system that allows for extensive adjustment. This makes it easy to dial in a comfortable fit regardless of torso length or shoulder width. We appreciate this adjustment style because it offers more customization than traditional fixed-position sternum straps.

Cotopaxi Allpa 26L Daypack Harness System

The back panel incorporates a moderate amount of padding and breathable mesh. While it doesn’t feature an advanced suspended mesh system, it provides enough airflow and cushioning to remain comfortable throughout extended periods of wear. We never felt excessively sweaty or uncomfortable during testing, even while carrying the pack for several hours.

Notably absent is a hip belt. For a 26-liter daypack, we don’t view this as a drawback. The bag’s lightweight construction and comfortable harness system make a hip belt largely unnecessary for its intended use cases. Unless you’re consistently carrying unusually heavy loads, the shoulder straps and sternum strap provide more than enough support.

Fit Notes

We tested the Cotopaxi Allpa 26L Daypack on a 5’6″ frame with a 16.5-inch torso, and, despite sitting slightly lower than ideal, it remained surprisingly comfortable. The lightweight construction helps prevent the bag from feeling bulky, while the structured shoulder straps distribute weight effectively, even when the pack is fully loaded. The adjustable sternum strap also makes it easy to fine-tune the fit and improve stability while walking.

Users with narrower frames may occasionally notice their arms brushing against the shoulder straps, though we never found this uncomfortable during testing. The mesh isn’t especially soft, but it avoids feeling abrasive against the neck and shoulders. Whether we were commuting, traveling, or carrying the pack for extended periods, the Cotopaxi Allpa 26L Daypack delivered a comfortable carry experience that exceeded our expectations for a bag of this size and simplicity.

Inside The Backpack

The interior organization is where the Cotopaxi Allpa 26L Daypack begins to distinguish itself from both traditional daypacks and the larger Allpa travel bags. Rather than relying heavily on a single large compartment, Cotopaxi divides storage into several independent sections that maintain their own volume.

Cotopaxi Allpa 26L Daypack Laptop Compartment
Cotopaxi Allpa 26L Daypack | The laptop compartment.

Starting with the laptop compartment, we found enough room for a 16-inch MacBook Pro with approximately 1-2 inches of false-bottom protection. That extra clearance provides peace of mind when setting the bag down quickly or navigating crowded environments. In front of the laptop sleeve is an additional sleeve sized for a tablet or smaller device. During testing, it comfortably accommodated an e-reader, though a 13-inch tablet should fit as well.

The laptop compartment also includes some extra open space, allowing users to store documents or accessories alongside their devices. While we didn’t rely heavily on this area, it’s nice to have additional flexibility available when needed.

Moving to the front of the bag, a secondary zippered compartment sits beneath the top quick-access pocket. One characteristic we appreciate throughout this design is that each compartment largely maintains its own capacity. Loading one section doesn’t dramatically intrude into another, making organization more predictable and easier to manage.

This secondary compartment houses a key leash, though it’s worth noting that the leash is quite short. We found ourselves somewhat conflicted about its placement. Keeping keys lower in the bag helps reduce clutter in the upper compartments, but frequent key users may prefer quicker access near the top. This feels more like a personal preference issue than a design flaw.

Above that sits a larger quick-access compartment that quickly became one of our favorite areas of the bag. Its independent volume allows it to hold a surprising amount of gear without compromising the main compartment. During testing, we routinely stored sunglasses, a smartphone, and a packable rain jacket inside, with room to spare.

Within this compartment is a fleece-lined zippered pocket that provides a safe location for electronics and delicate accessories. We used it for items like headphones and a battery bank, though it could easily accommodate a smartphone or other valuables. The fleece lining adds a nice touch of protection to help prevent scratches.

One practical advantage of the lower accessory pocket is that it sits beneath the upper compartment’s overhang, providing a small degree of additional security. It’s not a hidden pocket by any means, but the extra layer of coverage makes it slightly less visible and accessible to others.

The main compartment opens using dual zippers and offers a partial clamshell experience. Unlike larger Allpa travel packs that open completely flat, this design strikes a compromise between travel-style access and everyday convenience. We found it easy to open wide enough to see and access contents without requiring the full footprint of a traditional clamshell backpack.

The compartment itself is impressively spacious. During testing, we comfortably packed multiple packing cubes, a tech pouch, a packable jacket, an umbrella, and a Nintendo Switch case, while still leaving room for additional items. We even managed to fit food containers flat inside the bag, making it useful for commuting and office use.

Inside the main compartment are several organizational features, including mesh pockets, slip pockets, pen slots, and a zippered pocket. While these options provide flexibility, we rarely used them. Once the bag is loaded with larger items, accessing some of the internal organization becomes more difficult. As a result, we found ourselves relying on packing cubes, tech pouches, and other standalone organizers instead.

That said, users who prefer built-in organization may appreciate having these options available. The pockets don’t occupy much space, and since they sit along the perimeter of the compartment, they remain unobtrusive when not in use.

An interesting discovery during testing was that a smaller 13-inch laptop could fit inside the main compartment’s rear sleeve, as well. It’s not necessarily the intended use case, but it does open the possibility of carrying multiple devices if needed.

Overall, the organizational philosophy feels very intentional. Rather than forcing users into a rigid system, the Cotopaxi Allpa 26L Daypack provides several independent storage zones, allowing individuals to decide how much structure they want to incorporate. For travelers who already use pouches and packing cubes, this flexibility works exceptionally well.
