Full Review
Minimalist slings have become a staple for everyday carry, especially when you only need the basics: phone, wallet, keys, and maybe a small accessory or two. The RE:FORM ES:01 Essential Sling 1.2L leans hard into that philosophy. With just 1.2 liters of capacity, this sling isn’t trying to compete with larger crossbody bags or tech-focused slings loaded with compartments. Instead, it focuses on a streamlined silhouette, premium materials, and a straightforward design meant for the absolute essentials.

We’ve been testing this sling for a couple of weeks to see how well that concept works with real-world use. RE:FORM is known for using durable materials and crafting sleek-looking accessories, and that attention to material quality is immediately noticeable here. However, minimalist design choices can be a double-edged sword. While the ES:01 looks sharp and feels durable, there are a few areas where its usability doesn’t quite match the promise of the design. Let’s dig into how the sling performs in daily carry.
External Components
The standout element of the RE:FORM ES:01 Essential Sling 1.2L is its material. The sling uses RE:FORM’s Horizon fabric, a 420D ripstop nylon that features a clear PU coating and TPU lamination. In practice, this gives the sling a noticeably structured feel while also providing solid weather resistance. The ripstop grid pattern is visible on the surface, adding both visual texture and durability against tears or abrasions.

The material feels tough and slightly rigid, which helps the sling maintain its shape whether it’s fully packed or nearly empty. That structural rigidity means the sling retains a rounded profile that looks clean and consistent. Even if the items inside are unevenly packed, the bag doesn’t look as lumpy or saggy as softer slings sometimes do. The downside is that the fabric has a slightly crunchy feel reminiscent of some laminated technical fabrics. It’s not quite as thin as materials like X-Pac, though, and it comes across a bit heavier as a result.
At roughly 7.2 ounces, the sling isn’t excessively heavy, but it’s worth noting that many slings in this size range come in lighter. Because this bag is designed for minimal carry, some users may prefer the lightest possible option. Still, the tradeoff here is durability, and the Horizon fabric feels like it will hold up well over time.

Visually, the sling keeps things simple. Branding is minimal, with a subtle RE:FORM logo on the front. Otherwise, the exterior is clean and uncluttered, with no extra pockets, loops, or design flourishes competing for attention. This minimal aesthetic makes it easy to pair with a variety of styles, from casual streetwear to more technical travel gear.
The strap system follows that same minimalist philosophy. There’s a single adjustment point at the center of the strap, making it easy to tighten or loosen while the sling is already on your body. We appreciate this placement because it allows for quick adjustments throughout the day. If you’re adding or removing layers like jackets or hoodies, you can dial in the fit without removing the sling entirely. Another thoughtful detail is the closed-loop strap design. Since the adjustment system doesn’t leave excess webbing hanging loose, you don’t have to worry about extra strap ends flapping around as you move. It’s a small design choice, but one that keeps the overall aesthetic clean and tidy.

The strap itself is made from a seatbelt-style webbing that feels soft and smooth against the body. Despite the lack of padding, we didn’t find it uncomfortable during testing, which makes sense given the sling’s small size and the limited weight it’s meant to carry. A FIDLOCK magnetic buckle sits along the strap, allowing you to quickly detach the sling when needed. FIDLOCK hardware is a favorite in the travel gear world because it combines the security of a mechanical connection with the convenience of magnetic alignment. In this case, the buckle works well and makes it easy to remove the sling without pulling it over your head.
Fit Notes

Where the RE:FORM ES:01 Essential Sling 1.2L starts to show some limitations is in how it sits on the body. Because the sling is fairly wide and constructed with stiff materials, it doesn’t contour to your torso the way softer slings do. Instead of wrapping naturally around your body, it tends to maintain its structured shape, which can create small gaps between the bag and your chest when worn across the front. This can make the sling look slightly larger than its 1.2-liter capacity might suggest.

We found it sat a bit better when worn on the back, since the wider area of your back gives the sling more surface to rest against. Even then, the rigid edges don’t fold or flex much, so it still sits somewhat away from the body. To keep it from shifting around, we often had to tighten the strap more than expected. Because of this, the ES:01 may feel more natural on larger frames, while users with smaller builds might notice the stiffness and shape more during daily wear.
Inside The Sling
The interior layout of the RE:FORM ES:01 Essential Sling 1.2L is extremely simple. In fact, the entire bag essentially revolves around a single main compartment. There’s no rear slip pocket or padded panel, which reinforces the minimalist design approach.

A magnetic closure system handles access to the main compartment. Two Hypalon pull tabs sit at the top of the bag, and pulling them apart opens the compartment. In theory, this design should make it quick and easy to reach your gear without having to deal with zippers. Magnetic closures can be great for fast access, especially on small everyday carry bags. In practice, the execution here is a bit mixed. The opening doesn’t stay wide enough on its own, which means we often have to use both hands to create enough space to reach inside. That can make grabbing gear feel less convenient than expected. Ideally, a sling like this would allow you to open it with one hand while wearing it, but we found the opening mechanism often required extra effort.
Inside the main compartment, organization is minimal but functional. Two small dump pockets line the interior, offering a place to store tiny tiny everyday travel accessories like earbuds or lip balm. These pockets help keep tiny items from floating around the compartment, which is especially helpful given the limited space. With only 1.2 liters of capacity, the sling is firmly in the essentials-only category. During testing, we comfortably fit a phone, wallet, and keys, along with a couple of smaller accessories. Once those items are inside, though, the bag is pretty much at capacity.

There is technically additional vertical space at the top of the compartment, but it’s difficult to access because of the narrow opening. While you can place items up there, reaching them requires digging around more than we’d like. Because of that, we didn’t use that space very often. There’s also a small zippered pocket located inside the compartment. This pocket has a self-locking YKK zipper that prevents it from opening unintentionally. Inside that pocket, you’ll find a key leash with a simple clip attachment.
The key leash is useful for keeping keys separate from other gear, especially if you’re worried about scratching items like phones or sunglasses. However, accessing this pocket can be somewhat awkward when the main compartment is full. Since the zipper sits partially under the lip of the bag, it can be difficult to reach the zipper pull if there are larger items inside. Because of this, we didn’t always use the zippered pocket for keys. Instead, we often kept keys in the main compartment for easier access. If you have keyless entry for your car or building and don’t need to grab your keys often, the zip pocket works better as a tucked-away storage spot.

Overall, the interior organization works for a minimalist sling, but it doesn’t feel especially refined. The magnetic opening concept is interesting, but the limited access reduces its practicality in everyday use.
