If you’re big on organizational features and durable, technical materials, you probably like ALPAKA. It seems like every bag, pouch, and sling we test from the brand includes tons of pockets, compartments, and places to put nearly every item we might carry, saving you from having to do it yourself with other pouches or kits. Sometimes that’s great, and sometimes it feels a bit much, so we were interested to see where the ALPAKA Bravo Passport Pouch falls on the spectrum. If you’re ready, too, let’s dive in.

ALPAKA Bravo Passport Pouch Side
ALPAKA Bravo Passport Pouch | You have options for carrying this pouch.

External Components

To start, we have to say that ALPAKA’s Bravo line of gear just looks nice. It’s slick and streamlined, and you just look polished and professional carrying it.

The Bravo Passport Pouch fits in with the rest. It’s made with ALPAKA’s Axoflux 210D, which is a ripstop nylon. We’ve got it green, but you can also get it in Black if you prefer.

ALPAKA Bravo Passport Pouch Zipper Pull
ALPAKA Bravo Passport Pouch | YKK zippers are stiff but weather resistant.

There’s no branding on the pouch, and both colorways are accented in black, since that’s the color of the YKK AquaGuard zippers, the corded pulls, and the two straps that come with the bag. The zippers are stiff but work well, and they offer weather resistance for your travel gear, so we don’t mind using a little muscle to open them.

ALPAKA Bravo Passport Pouch MagLockz in Use
ALPAKA Bravo Passport Pouch | There are three places to connect the straps.

The other noticeable feature is the MagLockz used to attach one or both straps. There are three loops on the back of the pouch: two at the top and one on the right. That gives you three attachment points for the wrist strap, the option to carry the pouch horizontally or vertically like a sling, or to use it as a standalone pouch without any strap. Attaching and detaching the MagLockz on the strap to the buckles is easy, though removing the connectors from the round straps takes effort, so we ended up just leaving all three in place.

ALPAKA Bravo Passport Pouch Vertical
ALPAKA Bravo Passport Pouch | You can swap it on the go.

That actually came in handy when, as the primary tester, I took it for an afternoon bike ride to the park. I thought wearing it horizontally crossbody would be the most comfortable way to do it, and it was. It sits on your front much better than on your back if you’re leaning over a bike, but the webbing strap was comfortable, and it didn’t shift around much as I rode. Coming back, I decided to give vertical carry a go, and then I was able to shift it around to the side of my back. It was slightly more comfortable that way, though it didn’t stay in place as well. Either way, it was nice to have options on the go.

There’s no back panel padding or breathable mesh, but I didn’t miss it. The pouch is small, and you can’t fit anything bulky in the pocket against the back panel of the main compartment, so extra padding isn’t really necessary.

Fit Notes

ALPAKA Bravo Passport Pouch Side by Side
Left: Eric Hergenreder, Height: 6’0″ (183 cm), Torso: 18.5” (47 cm) | Right: Kristyne Defever, Height: 5’5” (165 cm), Torso: 17” (43 cm)

As we just mentioned, the ALPAKA Bravo Passport Pouch is comfortable to carry while on the go, but it also pairs well with another bag. The webbing strap is adjustable and has a built-in keeper. Even full, it doesn’t dig into your shoulder, though it can slip some, depending on your clothing and what you’re doing while carrying it. That happened to me while biking, but not while walking.

ALPAKA Bravo Passport Pouch Full
ALPAKA Bravo Passport Pouch | Take off the straps and it becomes a pouch.

You can carry it crossbody or over one shoulder, or remove the straps entirely and tuck it into your travel backpack or daypack. You’ll want to do that if you already have a larger travel bag (backpack or luggage) and another personal item bag. Use the straps to keep your passport and phone handy throughout the airport, then tuck the pouch inside your personal item bag so the gate agents don’t stop you from boarding for having three bags. It’s so small that it’s basically just an extra pocket, but we’ve noticed that they’re really cracking down. If you only have a travel backpack and nothing to put under the seat in front of you, pop your headphones into the pouch to connect to the in-flight entertainment, and you’ll be set. But if you’re like some of us here at Pack Hacker and want a book, snacks, water, and an extra layer on the plane, make room for the pouch, too.

ALPAKA Bravo Passport Pouch Wrist Strap
ALPAKA Bravo Passport Pouch | There’s a wrist strap, too.

Our least-favorite way of carrying the pouch is by the wrist strap, as it seems a bit wide and stiff for comfort, but it acts as a handle to pull the pouch out of another bag if you want, or you can just leave it behind if you’re like us and don’t love it.

Inside The Pouch

The front pocket of the ALPAKA Bravo Passport Pouch is the perfect size for a standard iPhone or any phone up to 6.86 inches (17.42 cm). That means you can pull it out to check your flight status or check in with friends and family without dislodging anything else in the main compartment, although you can stow it in there instead if you prefer. There’s a small pocket for a smart tracker in here, too, in case you misplace it.

The main compartment holds everything else.

It unzips from the top of the right side all the way down the left side, which becomes the top if you carry it vertically. This allows it to open widely for better access and to change how you carry it. Since there are two pulls on the main compartment, you don’t have to open the left side if you don’t want to as you carry it horizontally or unzip the top (which becomes the right side) if you’re carrying it vertically.

ALPAKA Bravo Passport Pouch Cards and Pen
ALPAKA Bravo Passport Pouch | There’s a pen slot above a passport pocket.

The entire interior of the main compartment is RFID-protected, so you have options for where to stash your passport, or you can carry two. The front pocket fastens with a magnet on its right side, holding bills in place if you have cash. There’s also a gusset for a bit of extra wiggle room when putting a passport in or taking it out. A pen holder sits above this pocket. Although it rests right on top of your passport, it fits if you choose to put it on this side.

On the face of the pocket are three card slots, so you can bring your ID and two cards if you want to leave a larger wallet at home. It’s especially easy to grab the cards when the pouch is positioned vertically, since they face up, but it’s easy to pull them out regardless of how you carry the bag.

ALPAKA Bravo Passport Pouch in Use
ALPAKA Bravo Passport Pouch | You can also put your passport in the back pocket.

The back panel has a similar slip pocket, with its gusset at the same side (facing the zipper). We prefer to put the passport here when we’re carrying a pen to avoid both being on the same side, but we don’t always carry a pen, so it’s not necessarily an issue. There isn’t a magnetic fastener on this side, but it doesn’t do much with a passport inside, and we don’t miss it. If you’re not carrying a second passport and want to use a minimalist wallet instead of the pouch on your trip, you can pop it into the pocket you don’t use for a passport to avoid having to repack it at your destination.

ALPAKA Bravo Passport Pouch Inside Pocket
ALPAKA Bravo Passport Pouch | Stow keys, dongles, or other small accessories in the zippered pocket.

On the face of this pocket is a zippered pocket. It’s lined with fleece, which we find amusing because it is much too small to hold anything we’d be concerned about scratching. Our sunglasses don’t fit inside, and neither does our phone. We’ve been using it for lip balm, which doesn’t need protection, but the fleece isn’t really hurting anything. It’s also a good spot for keys, protecting your other gear from scratches.

Something we notice with a lot of ALPAKA gear is that when you pack all of the pockets, there’s no room remaining in the center. That’s true here, but we don’t really mind it on a pouch that’s designed to hold the bare necessities for travel and then blend into the background. This isn’t a tote or backpack that you need to shove bulky gear into; it’s a small pouch for your passport, cards, cash, phone, and that’s about it. It’ll get you through the airport and to your plane without losing your important documents or scrambling to find them in a bigger bag, and we think it does that well. Then, you can carry it at your destination, provided you keep your everyday setup just as streamlined.
