Full Review

The Owala Puffer Mini 7L is a lightweight small cooler with a unique inflatable design that aims to boost insulation without adding much weight. It has a playful look and is geared toward lunches, snacks, and short outings, but does the inflatable gimmick actually work? We took it through everyday use and some more controlled testing to find out.

External Components

The exterior is crafted from polyester with polyurethane insulation inside, giving it a soft, puffy look that’s unlike most coolers we’ve tested. It feels durable enough for everyday errands, lunches, and trips to the park, though we wouldn’t call it rugged. If you’re tossing it in the back of your car or carrying it into the office, it’ll be right at home. If you’re looking for something to survive rough backpacking trips or constant abuse, there are tougher options available.

Owala Puffer Mini 7L Handle
Owala Puffer Mini 7L | We dig the look of this cooler.

The cooler uses a YKK 8RC zipper, which is always nice to see. It glides smoothly and features a PU coating that helps keep water out and slows moisture from escaping. It isn’t completely waterproof, but it does a good job handling splashes and everyday use. The zipper pull is simple, easy to grab, and doesn’t get in the way.

There are two handles attached to the top of the cooler that come together when carrying it. They’re soft to the touch, have Owala subtly imprinted on them, and feel durable enough for the weight this cooler is designed to carry. We’ll talk more about comfort in the next section, but we had no concerns about the handles themselves.

Owala Puffer Mini 7L In Use
Owala Puffer Mini 7L | It’s a solid medium-sized cooler.

The bottom has a small gusset that helps the cooler fold inward when it’s empty. However, we wouldn’t call the Owala Puffer Mini packable. Even if you leave the inflation valve open and place something heavy on top, it still takes up a fair amount of space. It’ll fit nicely in the trunk of your car or a large checked suitcase, but we wouldn’t expect to slide it into a daypack or travel backpack without giving up a lot of room.

There isn’t much else going on externally, and that’s okay. A small Owala logo adds subtle branding without dominating the design, giving the cooler a clean, minimal appearance.

Owala Puffer Mini 7L Brand
Owala Puffer Mini 7L | The branding is minimal.

Overall, the materials and hardware feel well-suited to the cooler’s intended use. It isn’t built for rugged adventures, but it feels perfectly at home for lunches, beach days, road trips, and spontaneous picnics.

Fit Notes

There’s only one way to carry the Owala Puffer Mini: with the two handles mentioned earlier. They don’t have any padding or aeration—just soft webbing that feels comfortable enough in your hand. Since this isn’t a particularly large cooler, that isn’t much of an issue. Even when it’s loaded with food and drinks, it remains manageable, though carrying a full load of cans for an extended period can become a little uncomfortable.

Owala Puffer Mini 7L Shoulder
Owala Puffer Mini 7L | You can take this cooler almost anywhere.

The handles are just long enough to throw the cooler over your shoulder if you want to free up a hand. There isn’t a ton of extra room, so those with broader shoulders or larger arms may find it a tight fit, but it works well enough for longer walks when you don’t want to carry it by your side the entire time.

Unlike many small coolers we’ve tested, this one lacks attachment points for a shoulder strap, nor can you swap the handles for something more comfortable. You’re committed to the included carry method. Thankfully, considering the cooler’s size, we never found that to be a major drawback.

Inside The Cooler

The interior is one large open compartment with no organization, which is exactly what we’d expect from a cooler this size. The only feature inside is the inflation valve, which you open and inflate by mouth. It takes a little extra effort to set up, but once inflated, it noticeably improves the cooler’s insulation. It’s a small inconvenience that’s easy enough to overlook, considering the benefit.

Owala Puffer Mini 7L Cans
Owala Puffer Mini 7L | You can fit eight cans comfortably.

During everyday testing, we used the cooler to carry a sandwich, fruit, vegetables, and a can of Olipop, along with an ice pack, for lunch. After roughly four hours, everything was still cold and ready to eat. We also loaded it with a six-pack on ice for an evening outside, and the drinks stayed cold until the last one was gone.

We also wanted to see how the inflatable insulation performed in a more controlled test. We filled the cooler with ice around midnight and checked it roughly eight hours later, the following morning. About half the ice had melted, but the remaining ice kept the interior frigid. That’s a solid result for a cooler of this size and confirms it’ll easily handle a full day of lunches, drinks, or snacks.

Owala Puffer Mini 7L Air Valve
Owala Puffer Mini 7L | The air valve.

That testing did reveal one drawback, though. The bottom corners of the cooler don’t appear to have as much insulation as the rest of the bag, and condensation formed on the exterior there as the ice melted. It wasn’t enough to soak everything around it, but it did drip enough that we’d be careful about setting it on items you don’t want to get damp. We realize this isn’t a perfect real-world scenario, but it gave us a good look at how the cooler behaves over an extended period with a heavy ice load.

Cleaning is generally straightforward, though water likes to hide in those same tight bottom corners. Even after wiping the interior dry, moisture can linger if you don’t really work your finger into the corners. Leaving the cooler open will eventually let everything dry out, but taking an extra minute to wipe those areas thoroughly is well worth the effort.

Owala Puffer Mini 7L Showcase
Owala Puffer Mini 7L | There are a few colorways available.

Overall, the Owala Puffer Mini impressed us. The inflatable insulation might seem gimmicky at first, but it genuinely helps keep food and drinks cold throughout the day. It isn’t the most packable cooler despite what the marketing suggests, and the condensation in the corners is something to be aware of. Still, if you’re looking for a compact cooler for lunches, road trips, or casual outings, it delivers where it counts.
