ALPAKA Zip Pouch Max V2 Review

If you want to organize gear in a slim package, the ALPAKA Zip Pouch Max V2 is good on its own or in a bag, though the pockets compete for the limited space.

Fans of ALPAKA love good organization. Or at least they ought to, given how segmented and thoughtfully designed ALPAKA products are. How does that translate to a pouch that can also be worn as a sling? We’ve been using the ALPAKA Zip Pouch Max V2 for a couple of weeks to find out.

External Components

Along with organization, ALPAKA is also known for its technical, proprietary materials, and the Zip Pouch Max V2 is no different.

ALPAKA Zip Pouch Max V2 Material
ALPAKA Zip Pouch Max V2 | It comes in Ultradyne or Axoflux.

You can get it in two different exterior materials. The one we’re testing has Ultradyne™, a blend of Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber and recycled polyester, with a nylon grid reinforcement and recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) backing for exterior structure. It’s naturally water-resistant and PFAS-free. We find it very strong and flexible, though it is crunchy to the touch and noisy. In our experience, it’s a material you either really like or don’t; some of us here at Pack Hacker are fans, and some of us aren’t. If you aren’t, you can also get the pouch in Axoflux 210D ripstop nylon, instead.

ALPAKA Zip Pouch Max V2 Zipper
ALPAKA Zip Pouch Max V2 | Hypalon-like pulls make it easy to open the zippers.

Water-resistant fabrics wouldn’t do you much good without water-resistant fasteners, and we’re happy to see coated YKK zippers on the face and for the main compartment of the Zip Pouch Max V2. They work well and open with Hypalon-like pulls that are easy to grab. The rear zipper is reverse-coil, but it’s beneath a fabric welt to keep it safe from water instead. While we’ve mostly been using this as a pouch in another bag, we appreciate the weather resistance for those of you who might want to carry it on its own.

ALPAKA Zip Pouch Max V2 MagLockz
ALPAKA Zip Pouch Max V2 | The two straps attach with Maglockz.

You can, since there are loops at the back with Maglockz attachment points for straps. The ALPAKA Zip Pouch Max V2 comes with a wrist strap, which we used most, as well as an adjustable crossbody strap. They’re both simple webbing with no padding, yet get the job done. The wrist strap helps you pull the pouch out of another bag and carry it to your desk, while the longer strap lets you take the pouch on its own to a cafe or other spot. Since it’s big enough to hold a small tablet or e-reader, it’s nice to be able to carry it solo instead of having to pair it with another bag. There’s no back panel padding, but since it hangs at your side instead of tightly against your chest, we don’t mind.

Fit Notes

While we’ve been using the ALPAKA Zip Pouch Max V2 mostly as, well, a pouch, we do like the option to carry it by wrist or crossbody strap. Since we have it packed with tech accessories, it’s convenient to slip the wrist strap on and carry it with our laptop to different spots in the house to work. Some of us don’t like to sit still, and if that’s you, it’s good for that. It also stands on its own on a table or desk, which is nice for reaching in and grabbing what you need without it taking up a lot of room on your work surface.

ALPAKA Zip Pouch Max V2 Wrist Strap
ALPAKA Zip Pouch Max V2 | We like using the wrist strap.

The crossbody strap is also fine to wear if that’s what you prefer. With a 2L capacity, it’s hard for things to get heavy enough that you’d mind the absence of strap padding. We like that both straps are slim enough to store inside the pouch when you aren’t using them, to have at the ready when you do want them. The Maglockz connections slide around the loops on the back, so the strap always hangs nicely, no matter how it’s adjusted, and the built-in adjustment means there aren’t any dangling straps to deal with. As usual, ALPAKA keeps things clean and aesthetically pleasing. Organized, technical, and clean-looking: that’s what you get with ALPAKA, and that’s what you’ll find with the Zip Pouch Max V2.

Inside The Pouch

There are two exterior pockets for gear on the ALPAKA Zip Pouch Max V2: one on the front and one on the back. We use the front pocket for a phone and wallet to keep them easily accessible when carrying the pouch on its own. It’s a rather slim pocket, so whatever you put inside can push into the main compartment. You won’t fit anything bulky here, and you’ll even see the outline of your phone if you use the pocket for that.

ALPAKA Zip Pouch Max V2 | The exterior pockets are quite slim.

The back pocket is similar. We’ve been using it for wired earbuds, and the same caveat applies to what fits inside. These exterior pockets are for slim gear, especially if you use the main compartment to capacity. Remember how we said that this 2L pouch can’t get too heavy? Well, that’s because you can’t fit a ton inside. We didn’t mind, but you’ll want to upgrade to a true sling or crossbody if you need more space.

ALPAKA Zip Pouch Max V2 Back Pocket
ALPAKA Zip Pouch Max V2 | Slim gear goes here.

The main compartment is simply, yet thoughtfully, organized. Against the back is a stiffer divider pocket. It’s large enough for an iPad Mini or similarly-sized tablet or e-reader, but you can also use it for cords, battery banks, or wall chargers. Putting bulkier gear inside causes the divider to bow out and cover the center of the pouch, though, preventing you from seeing small gear you stick there.

ALPAKA Zip Pouch Max V2 Tablet
ALPAKA Zip Pouch Max V2 | You can fit an iPad Mini or similarly-sized tablet inside.

Against the front panel are two large slip pockets. We’ve been using them for cables in our tech pouch setup. Each is half the width of the pouch, so you have options for what you fit inside. Wallets, tissues, or flash drives are also good choices. The bright orange liner keeps everything visible, even in dim spaces, so you should be able to find and grab whatever you need.

ALPAKA Zip Pouch Max V2 Inside
ALPAKA Zip Pouch Max V2 | There are two more pockets on the opposite side.

Depending on what you put in all of the pockets, you may have some space remaining in the middle, but you may not. We tucked a few smaller items (a mini sewing kit and a wall charger) there and sometimes forgot where we put them because the divider blocked the view. It’s a small space, though, so it won’t take you long if you do have to scrounge around.

So, is the ALPAKA Zip Pouch Max V2 right for you? If you like technical materials, nice organization, the ability to stand it on your desk, and to carry it with two different straps, it might be. If the crunchy Ultradyne™ bothers you, get the Axoflux ripstop nylon version instead!
