Bellroy Classic Messenger 13L Review

The Bellroy Classic Messenger 13L is the kind of bag that makes a lot of sense once you figure out exactly what you want to carry every day. With enough room for a laptop, a tech pouch, lunch, a jacket, and a water bottle, it sits in that sweet spot between a compact everyday bag and one you can actually use at the office. We’ve been testing it for two weeks, primarily as a commute-friendly carry, and its straightforward design makes it easy to settle into a daily routine. It’s not trying to be a do-everything travel bag, but for getting from home to the office and back, the capacity and organization are well-suited to the job.

At 13 liters, this is the larger option in the Classic Messenger lineup, with a smaller version coming in at around 6 liters. The bigger size gives us considerably more flexibility without making the bag feel unnecessarily complicated. The exterior is minimalist, the main compartment is spacious, and there’s enough padding around the back and laptop compartment to protect the important stuff. There are a few quirks along the way, particularly with the front pocket and one of the zippers, but the overall construction feels thoughtfully designed. Most importantly, the harness system brings some genuinely useful functionality to what could otherwise be a pretty standard messenger bag.

External Components

The Bellroy Classic Messenger 13L keeps things understated on the outside. Its Canva Weave recycled polyester material has a smooth, slick, matte-like appearance and feels durable enough for everyday use. During our testing, we didn’t notice loose threads or anything that raised concerns about longevity. The downside is that the soft surface is something of a magnet for dust and pet hair, especially around the back and bottom. Fortunately, it’s easy enough to wipe clean, so this is more of a maintenance annoyance than a major durability concern.

There’s also a decent amount of padding across the back panel, which provides cushioning when the bag is against your body and adds protection for the gear inside. The padding doesn’t extend as generously to the bottom or front sides, though. That hasn’t been a problem for us since we’re not particularly rough when setting a messenger bag down, but it’s worth keeping in mind if you prefer a heavily padded bag. A leather Bellroy logo on the front is essentially the only other visual detail, giving the bag a clean appearance. Since that logo is leather, this isn’t a vegan bag.

The real star of the exterior is the shoulder strap. At first glance, the harness looks pretty conventional, but the padding can actually be removed. It’s around an inch thick and substantial enough to spread the load across the shoulder rather than concentrating pressure in one small area. We also appreciate its length. Instead of constantly repositioning a short shoulder pad as the bag moves around, we can put it where we want and mostly forget about it.

The removable padding also solves a problem we’ve had with other messenger bags and their padded straps. On many messenger bags, the shoulder padding is permanently fixed around the adjustment hardware, which can make centering the bag awkward. Here, we can unbuckle the padding, move the adjustment buckle past it, and then position the bag exactly where we want it. It’s a small detail, but one that makes dialing in the fit much easier.

The strap attaches to the back of the bag rather than directly to the sides, which helps the Classic Messenger 13L sit flatter against the body when worn crossbody. There’s also a substantial top handle that’s easy to grab without feeling like it gets in the way.

We primarily carried the Bellroy Classic Messenger 13L crossbody style, which is where the harness system makes the most sense. The substantial shoulder padding feels comfortable and provides enough coverage that we don’t constantly feel the need to reposition it. Once we found our preferred adjustment, the bag stayed comfortable through regular use. The strap arrangement also lets us shift the bag around depending on what we’re doing without fighting against the construction.

We found it comfortable when carried around the hip or shifted toward the back. The rear attachment points help it sit relatively flat in that position, which is particularly useful when we don’t need immediate access to the bag. It can also be worn over one shoulder, and adjusting the strap for that carry style is straightforward. Between the different carry positions and removable padding, the Classic Messenger 13L gives us more control over how it sits than we typically expect from a bag this simple.

Inside The Messenger

Access to the main compartment is straightforward: open the top flap, and the entire interior is right there. There’s no zipper sealing the main compartment, which makes loading and unloading especially easy. We didn’t find ourselves wishing for one during testing, although the open design does mean this isn’t the messenger we’d choose if maximum weather protection were a priority. Water beads off the exterior reasonably well, but this isn’t a watertight setup for consistently wet commutes.

One of the best things about the main compartment is that the bag stands up on its own. That sounds like a small detail, but it makes a noticeable difference when we’re loading or unloading. During testing, we carried a tech pouch, a packable jacket, and lunch inside, and the bag remained upright even after everything was removed. The main compartment has a relatively open layout, giving us plenty of freedom to arrange larger everyday items.

There’s also a mesh water bottle pocket on the side. A 16-ounce YETI fits comfortably and sits close to the top of the pocket. A taller 24-ounce Hydro Flask technically fits, but it extends high enough that the top flap doesn’t sit quite as neatly. The adjustable buckles help accommodate taller bottles, although we can’t cinch them down as tightly with a larger bottle inside. Since the main compartment isn’t fully zippered, a particularly tall bottle can also create a small gap underneath the flap.

A zippered pocket inside the main compartment provides another place for smaller items or tech. We didn’t find ourselves using it much because we were already carrying a tech pouch. Still, it could be useful for sunglasses or other items we’d rather keep separated from the main compartment. It’s a nice option to have without taking up much usable space.

The laptop compartment is one of this bag’s stronger organizational features. It sits toward the back and is designed for up to a 14-inch laptop. We carried a 13-inch MacBook Pro inside, and the fit worked well. The compartment has its own YKK zipper for a secure laptop enclosure, even though the main compartment itself is open at the top. That extra layer of security is reassuring when we’re moving the bag around or shifting it between carry positions.

There’s padding around the laptop compartment, and the sleeve extends toward the base of the bag. While it isn’t a massive false bottom, the padding makes the laptop feel better protected than the overall construction might initially suggest. The combination of dedicated storage, padding, and a zippered closure makes this a particularly useful feature for an office commute.

The front quick-access pocket is a little more complicated. It sits underneath the top flap, so we have to release the front buckles before we can properly access it. The magnetic Woojin buckles are easy to operate, but the process is still slower than simply reaching for a zipper on the outside. Inside, there are two slip pockets, a pen slot, and a key leash. We found the slip pockets useful for a phone, wallet, and AirPods, while the key leash is long enough to use our keys without having to completely take off the bag.

The pocket itself can expand independently, which means it retains useful capacity even when the main compartment is packed out. The tradeoff is that there’s no liner or padding, so we’d be more cautious about placing a phone in the open section with its screen facing outward. The pocket works well for everyday organization, but the zipper itself is the least polished part of the bag. Its teeth feel somewhat rough, and the zipper can occasionally catch against itself when the bag is compressed or positioned a certain way. It’s not enough to ruin the experience, but it stands out because the rest of the bag feels so well considered.
