Olight iUltra OAL Keychain Flashlight Review

Tiny flashlights are one of those pieces of gear you don’t think much about until you need one. Whether you’re unlocking your front door after dark, digging through your travel backpack under an airplane seat, or searching for something that mysteriously rolled under the couch, having a light within arm’s reach is surprisingly handy. The Olight iUltra OAL Keychain Flashlight aims to be that light—without adding much bulk to your keys. We’ve been testing it for the past two weeks to see if it deserves a permanent spot on our keychain. Let’s dive in!

The Rundown

The first thing that stands out about the Olight iUltra is its construction. The body is crafted from Olight’s proprietary OAL aluminum, which they claim is 1.73 times harder than traditional 6061 aluminum. We can’t verify that exact figure ourselves, but we can say that this thing feels incredibly durable.

After two weeks of riding around on a set of keys, getting tossed into pockets, backpacks, and slings, our sample still looks excellent. We expected to find at least a few scratches or signs of wear from sharing space with keys and coins, but it’s held up impressively well. We dig it.

At the time of writing, the flashlight is only available in Olive Green. Thankfully, it’s a good-looking Olive Green. The muted finish gives the light a premium feel that pairs nicely with the aluminum construction. We’d love to see Olight expand the lineup with additional colors down the road, but we’re perfectly happy with this one in the meantime.

The iUltra carries an IPX6 water-resistance rating, meaning it’ll shrug off rain, splashes, and the occasional spill without issue. We wouldn’t recommend taking it swimming, but for everyday travel and commuting, it offers plenty of protection.

Despite its tiny size, the flashlight outputs 80 lumens. That may not sound like much compared to larger flashlights we’ve tested, but context matters. This isn’t designed to illuminate an entire campsite or brighten up your living room during a power outage.

Instead, it’s intended for quick everyday tasks, and that’s exactly where it shines. Unlocking a door, finding something in your bag, checking a fuse box, or walking down a dim hallway are all well within its capabilities. We never found ourselves wishing it were dramatically brighter for those kinds of jobs.

Unlike many keychain flashlights, this one doesn’t have multiple brightness levels to cycle through. You get one mode: 80 lumens. For some users, that’ll feel limiting. For others, it’s refreshing. There’s no memorizing button combinations or wondering which mode you left the flashlight in last time.

Speaking of simplicity, this might be one of the easiest flashlights we’ve ever tested to operate. There isn’t a button anywhere on the light.

Instead, the front half of the flashlight attaches magnetically to the rear housing. Pull the light away from the magnetic base, and it instantly turns on. Snap it back into place, and it turns off.

There’s something satisfying about how intuitive this feels. We never had to think about operating it, even when grabbing it quickly in the dark. The magnetic connection is also stronger than we expected. Throughout testing, the light never separated accidentally while riding on our keychain, yet it was still easy to pull apart whenever we wanted to use it.

Because the light itself is magnetic, you can also stick it to metal surfaces for hands-free illumination. This is surprisingly useful for small repairs, digging through storage shelves, or checking under the hood of your car.

Since the magnetic surface is fixed directly to the back of the flashlight, you can’t angle the beam; wherever the metal surface faces is where the light points. Sometimes that’s perfect. Other times you’ll find yourself wishing you could tilt it just a little bit. Even so, it’s a genuinely useful feature that we appreciated having available.

Rather than including a USB-C port on the flashlight, the rear housing contains a hidden male USB-C connector. A small locking mechanism slides outward, revealing the connector, allowing you to plug the flashlight directly into a wall charger, laptop, battery bank, or pretty much any powered USB-C port.

It’s a clever solution because it eliminates the need for a charging cable. If you’ve already got a USB-C power source nearby—and chances are you do—you’ve also got everything you need to recharge the flashlight.

The mechanism can feel a little awkward the first few times you use it, mostly because you’re plugging the entire flashlight directly into your charger instead of using a cable. Once you get used to it, though, it becomes second nature, and we appreciate one less cable floating around our travel kit.

Power comes from an integrated 10180 lithium battery with an 80 mAh capacity. Olight rates the runtime at 50 minutes in the single 80-lumen mode, which feels appropriate given the flashlight’s intended purpose. Since most people use a keychain flashlight in short bursts rather than leaving it on continuously, we rarely worried about battery life during testing.

Olight lists the operating temperature range as 0° to 40°C (32° to 104°F), making it suitable for most everyday environments. Unless your travel plans involve trekking across Antarctica or hiking through Death Valley in midsummer, you’re probably covered.

The rear of the flashlight includes a small attachment loop and comes with a jump ring already installed. You can easily connect it directly to your keys, swap in a different split ring if you prefer, or clip it to a small carabiner. It’s a simple setup that works exactly as intended.

Overall, the iUltra leans heavily into simplicity. There are no hidden lighting modes, no button combinations to memorize, and no unnecessary complexity. You pull it apart, and it lights up. You snap it back together, and it turns off. Sometimes, that’s exactly what you want.

Packability

The entire flashlight easily disappears into the palm of your hand. It’s even smaller than a disposable lighter, which makes it incredibly easy to carry without thinking about it.

Interestingly, the light itself is even smaller than the complete unit. However, because you need the magnetic base to turn it off—and because that’s where the charging mechanism lives—you’ll almost always carry both pieces together.

The iUltra feels completely at home on a keychain. Unless you’re someone who carries an extremely minimalist setup with only a single key, it blends in naturally without adding much noticeable weight.

Even if keys aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other places to stash it. We had good luck clipping it onto a key leash inside a sling, where it stayed easy to find whenever we needed it. Considering how little space it occupies, it’s an easy piece of gear to justify carrying, especially when traveling.

Like the best keychain flashlights, it quietly disappears into your everyday carry until the moment you need it.

Quick Comparison

We’ve spent a lot of time using the NITECORE TIKI 300, making it the natural flashlight to compare against the Olight iUltra.

The biggest difference comes down to simplicity versus versatility.

The TIKI offers significantly more features. It outputs up to 300 lumens, offers multiple brightness settings, includes auxiliary lighting modes such as UV and a CRI reading light, and uses a button interface with different click combinations to access everything.

There’s one brightness level on the iUltra, one lighting mode, and absolutely no buttons. Pull the flashlight away from the magnetic base to turn it on, then snap it back together to turn it off. It’s difficult to imagine a simpler user experience.

Brightness is another obvious difference. The TIKI reaches 300 lumens, compared to the iUltra’s 80 lumens, making it the better choice if you regularly need to illuminate larger spaces or see farther into the distance.

That said, we found 80 lumens perfectly adequate for the everyday tasks most people actually use keychain flashlights for. Unlocking doors, searching through bags, finding dropped items, and quick inspections never left us wishing for dramatically more output.

Construction also differs between the two. The TIKI combines plastic and metal components, whereas the iUltra features a fully aluminum body that feels noticeably more premium. After carrying both, we’d give the edge to the iUltra in overall fit and finish.

Charging is another interesting distinction. The newer version of the TIKI charges via USB-C, but you’ll still need to carry a cable. The iUltra skips the cable entirely by integrating a folding male USB-C connector directly into the flashlight. It’s a little unconventional, but once you get used to it, it’s hard not to appreciate the convenience.

If you enjoy extra lighting modes, higher brightness, and more control over how your flashlight operates, the NITECORE TIKI remains an excellent choice.

If you’d rather have something that disappears onto your keychain, feels incredibly durable, and couldn’t be easier to use, the Olight iUltra makes a compelling case. Sometimes less really is more, especially when you’re just trying to find the keyhole after a long day of traveling.
