The tomtoc T02 Packing System is tomtoc’s attempt to build a modular packing ecosystem instead of just tossing a few generic cubes into a bundle and calling it a day. Designed alongside the brand’s T66 Travel Backpack, the system focuses on flexibility, lightweight materials, and a mix of specialized cubes that can handle everything from clothing to to dirty laundry. After testing, it feels less like a perfectly curated “one size fits all” kit and more like a toolkit you can adapt to your travel style over time.

tomtoc T02 Packing System | There are a lot of different cubes in this system.

That modularity is really the appeal here. Instead of every cube feeling redundant, each one serves a slightly different purpose. Some work better for compression, some for organization, and others for separating dirty gear from clean clothing. Not every cube will be useful for every traveler, but that’s kind of the point. You can mix and match depending on the trip, and the entire system is lightweight enough that it doesn’t feel like you’re sacrificing a ton of space or weight before you’ve even started packing.

External Components

The T02 Packing System uses a combination of polyester and nylon fabrics that strike a nice balance between lightweight flexibility and everyday durability. None of the cubes feels particularly overbuilt or rigid, and they’ve held up well throughout testing without showing any obvious wear. We haven’t run into durability issues yet, though long-term longevity is still a concern, given how lightweight the materials are. So far, though, so good.

tomtoc T02 Packing System | Some of the cubes have mesh on them.

Some of the cubes incorporate mesh panels, which we always appreciate on packing cubes. It makes identifying gear easier without fully opening everything, and it also helps the cubes breathe a bit better between washes or long travel days. The mesh itself feels reasonably durable and hasn’t shown signs of stretching out or tearing during testing. More importantly, none of the cubes have gotten particularly funky or trapped odors, which is always a win when dealing with travel laundry.

YKK zippers are used throughout the collection, and unsurprisingly, they work well. The zipper action feels smooth across the board, and we didn’t experience snagging or misalignment issues during testing. YKK remains the gold standard for a reason, and it’s nice to see tomtoc sticking with trusted hardware here.

Each cube features tomtoc branding prominently on the exterior. The logo is a little larger and more noticeable than we’d personally prefer, especially because the white print contrasts heavily against darker colorways. Still, this is pretty common for packing cubes, and it’s not something that dramatically impacts the experience.

One detail we really appreciated is the labeling system. Every cube has a tag indicating either the capacity or size, along with an icon suggesting its intended use. Some are immediately obvious—a shoe icon clearly marks the shoe bags (sold separately)—but others take a second to interpret. Even so, it’s a thoughtful touch that makes it much easier to differentiate cubes in your backpack at a glance.

All five cubes also include minimalist grab handles. They stay nicely out of the way when not in use, but make a surprisingly big difference when pulling cubes out of a tightly packed travel backpack or moving things around in a hotel room. It’s a small feature, but one we ended up using constantly throughout testing.

Inside The Packing Cube

The T02 Packing System includes five cubes, each with its own intended use. Rather than feeling repetitive, the variety helps the system feel more modular and adaptable, depending on the trip you’re taking.

tomtoc T02 Packing System 10L Full
tomtoc T02 Packing System | The 10-15L cube.

We’ll start with the T01L1D1, which is marketed as a 10–15L compression packing cube. In practice, we actually found ourselves thinking of it more as an expandable packing cube. The compression zipper runs around the lower perimeter of the cube, opening up an expansion gusset that adds extra volume when needed. Closing that zipper technically compresses the contents, though the compression effect isn’t particularly dramatic since it mainly reduces that expanded section. Still, the system works well, and we appreciate the added flexibility more than aggressive compression. There’s also a small mesh pocket inside for smaller accessories or clothing items.

Next is the T02M1D1, an 8L clean/dirty packing cube. This one uses blue zipper pulls and blue accents on the tag to visually distinguish it from the others, which we appreciated during testing. The larger main compartment features a mesh front panel and includes a small mesh pocket inside. The secondary compartment has its own dedicated zipper and is noticeably smaller, so you probably can’t transfer an entire fully packed load from one side to the other. Still, because the smaller section lacks mesh ventilation, it makes sense to use it as the “dirty” side for separating used clothing or damp gear.

tomtoc T02 Packing System | The 3L cube.

The T02S1D1 is the standard 3L packing cube and probably the most straightforward option in the lineup. There isn’t a ton going on here, but it works well for socks, underwear, or other smaller clothing items. There’s a small mesh pocket inside, though otherwise the design stays intentionally simple. It does its job well, though some travelers may find the 3L capacity a bit limiting if they prefer fewer, larger cubes.

tomtoc T02 Packing System | The medium shoe pouch.

The Light-T02 Travel Shoe Bag is sold separately, though we wanted to give some detail in this review, since they’re from the same line. The Medium offers 9 liters of capacity and includes a drawstring-style compression system with a plastic adjuster. We dig this setup because it lets the bag stay flexible, depending on the footwear you’re packing. There’s also a small mesh pocket inside for smaller accessories, like extra socks or shoe care items. Most everyday shoes fit comfortably, though if you have especially large footwear, it’s worth double-checking the dimensions before committing.

There’s also a larger, 13L version of the shoe bag. It uses the same drawstring compression system and internal mesh pocket, but scales everything up enough to accommodate larger shoes, including some hiking boots. If you regularly travel with bulkier footwear, this is probably the more versatile option.

tomtoc T02 Packing System | We appreciate how durable these cubes are.

Overall, we like the T02 Packing System quite a bit. The cubes are lightweight, thoughtfully differentiated, and flexible enough that you can build a setup around your travel style instead of forcing yourself into a rigid organizational system. Honestly, our biggest complaint is that there isn’t a larger standard clothing cube included—outside of the expandable model, the only traditional cube is the smaller 3L version. Still, that’s more of a wishlist item than a dealbreaker. As it stands, this feels like a genuinely useful modular system that you can expand, swap around, or retire pieces from as your travel needs evolve.
